La tradición manda que el gran árbol de navidad del City Hall Square de Copenhaguen se alumbre con cientos de luces. Pero este año, la historia será diferente, a menos que las personas pedaleen fuerte.
Durante la cumbre climática, el Hall Square de Copenhague se transformará en una ciudad respetuosa con el medio ambiente llamada Hopenhagen Live. Hasta el 18 de diciembre, los habitantes de Copenhague y cualquiera concienciado con el medio ambiente puede subir a las bicicletas y pedalear para alumbrar el árbol, y quemar unas pocas calorías mientras están en ello. Esta manera alternativa de alumbrar el árbol de navidad ahorrará al medio ambiente un total de nueve toneladas de CO2 comparada con la manera tradicional de alumbrar el árbol.
Copenhagen ya se conoce como la ciudad de los ciclistas, y el término Copenhaguenizar se ha convertido en un lema para el nuevo concepto, cuando las ciudades trabajan para impulsar el uso en aumento de estos medios de transporte respetuosos en lo que al CO2 se refiere. Con más de 350 kilómetros de carriles bici y un tercio de los habitantes de Copenhague acudiendo al trabajo en bicicleta a diario, se puede decir que Copenhague es una ciudad en la que la bicicleta se utiliza realmente.
Mientras la cumbre climática de las Naciones Unidas tenga lugar en Bella Center del 7 al 18 de diciembre, toda la ciudad tendrá eventos culturales internacionales. En el City Hall Square habrá música, exhibiciones y acontecimientos. Al Gore y el obispo Desmond Tutu estarán en la ciudad, y más de 65 cabezas de estado y gobierno participarán en la oficial COP15 de Bella Center, sin mencionar los 100 alcaldes de todo el mundo invitados al City Hall Square durante la cumbre.
