Los fabricantes del Riversimple Hydrogen -el automóvil ligero propulsado por hidrógeno y presentado en Londres- publicarán en internet los detalles del proyecto con el objetivo de que cualquier persona o compañía pueda elaborar sus propias versiones.
Por medio de los diseños de código abierto se espera que productores locales mejoren la calidad del vehículo y que luego las modificaciones puedan registrarse y sigan circulando en lo que se ha dado en llamar una “red de fabricantes”, según informa el periodista de la BBC Jason Palmer.
Se estima que de esa manera los diseños podrán ajustarse a las características específicas de cada mercado y utilizarse piezas o materiales locales.
La compañía británica Riversimple, fundada por el ex piloto de carreras Hugo Spowers quien concibió la idea del auto en 1999, dotará de los planos de ingeniería del vehículo al grupo 40 Fires Foundation -una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada al desarrollo de coches de alta eficiencia energética- para que coloque los diseños al alcance de todos los interesados.
Según Riverside, esto estimulará el desarrollo de una producción local del vehículo en pequeñas plantas, lo cual contrasta con lo que se ha dado en llamar “economía de la escala” que potencia las grandes fábricas con fuerzas de trabajo voluminosas.
“Ultracapacitador”

El vehículo de hidrógeno es -como lo describe Palmer- una amalgama de diseños automotrices con ideas altamente eficientes.
Con la expectativa de rendimiento de 106 kilómetros por litro, el carro está construido con materiales ligeros, puede alcanzar 80 kilómetros por hora y cuenta con una batería de seis kilovatios que alimenta a los motores eléctricos en cada una de las cuatro ruedas.
La solución ideada por Riverside es alimentar el auto mediante un “ultracapacitador”, que acopia una gran cantidad de carga eléctrica y es capaz de liberarla casi instantáneamente y así proveer la energía necesaria para acelerar.
Aunque Spowers estima que está cerca de colocar en el mercado “un automóvil de batería de combustible viable comercialmente” todavía existe el reto de comenzar a desarrollar una infraestructura para el suministro de ese combustible.

Los fabricantes esperan iniciar la producción del auto para 2013.
Sin embargo, el año próximo se pretende presentar diez modelos en una ciudad británica cuyo nombre no ha trascendido.
La compañía Riverside llegó a un acuerdo con la empresa de suministro de gas BOC para instalar estaciones de servicio de hidrógenos en esa ciudad.
Los planes para el futuro incluyen establecer un punto de suministro de hidrógeno y presentar medio centenar de vehículos en varias localidades británicas.
En palabras de Spowers, “cada ciudad, una por una, puede construir una infraestructura urbana de uso del hidrógeno y a partir de ahí construir una infraestructura a nivel nacional”.
